  • CASA, Crawford Area Shelters for Animals, Inc., a foster home group of volunteers who work in the greater Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin area to care for homeless pets, and who hope to build an animal shelter

  • Midwest Missing Pet Network, serving Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota. This free service is dedicated to helping reunite pet owners with missing companions, and is run by volunteers.
  • Sunbear Squad, a humane awareness organization that prepares individuals to proactively watch and listen for pets in distress, and call the authorities immediately
  • Wisconsin Dog Rescue, an internet network of dog rescues and shelters in Wisconsin
  • Wisconsin List of Shelters, sponsored by NetPets

Dog and Cat Rescue Organizations

  • Black Pearl Dogs, a rescue devoted to rescuing and rehoming black dogs; many people are fearful of dogs that are all or mostly black-furred, so it is harder to find homes for them
  • Black Dog Rescue Project, an organization that works to improve the adoption rate for homeless black dogs by providing education and awareness of Black Dog Syndrome
  • LEARN, Labrador Education and Rescue Network serves Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin
  • Parrot Valley Rescue, a tropical bird rescue in Southwestern Wisconsin
  • Shelter Support Services, a rescue in the Madision, WI, area that emphasizes temperament testing and responsible rehoming of mostly adult mix-breed dogs

  • The Animal Protection Institute, Inc., a national animal advocacy organization that has programs for circus animals, animals used in science and education, exotic pets, and wildlife, and has a national primate sanctuary
  • Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics, a cruelty-free organization that supports ending animal testing in the cosmetics industry
  • Dogs Deserve Better, a nonprofit organization dedicated to freeing chained and penned dogs
  • Doris Day Animal League, a nonprofit, national, citizen’s lobbying organization formed to focus attention on issues involving the humane treatment of animals
  • Friends of Animals, non-profit, international animal advocacy organization, for free-living and domestic animals, fighting animal cruelty and exploitation
  • The Fund for Animals provides animal advocacy programs and animal care facilities. They have an “Urban Wildlife Hotline” that provides free advice for solving wildlife-in-your-backyard problems humanely. They also publish a variety of Coexisting with Wildlife fact sheets
  • Help 4 Pets provides a special ID tag for your pet’s collar imprinted with a nationwide toll-free phone number that will help bring your pet home again. It’s called the Pet Protector System.
  • National Association for Humane and Environmental Education is a classroom resource web site. It has a mission to instill good character in children, with a strong emphasis on the humane treatment of animals and respect for natural habitats.
  • People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the largest animal rights organization in the world
  • is a national animal protection organization that researches and tracks incidents of criminal animal cruelty.
  • Pet Owner’s Friend is a contact and rescue service that helps keep an eye on you and your pets, should you become suddenly incapacitated
  • Pets 911, a web site and nationwide hot line, 1-888-PETS-911 (1-888-738-7911), sponsored by Animal Planet and others, that provides free resource information on adoption, fostering, lost and found, volunteer, shelter/clinic, and health and training issues everywhere in America.
